Universals - Help!!

Hi there.

I am starting to try and identify a relatively large quantity of universals.
I have a CP catalogue, a copy of G.R. Lee's book and have read the relevant page on the society's website.
Are there any other books/websites that other members can recommend?
Similarly, I'd be grateful for any advice or suggestions that others might be able to offer me.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Universals - Help!!

Hi,

Many thanks VR.
Site appears to be exactly what I've been looking for.  The flow chart in particular looks very helpful as a basis for classification of universals.
Will get started this evening.

Thanks again.

Re: Universals - Help!!

HI COQK

Let me know if you have any difficulty and I am sure I can help you out with large enough scans.

Let me know when you decide to start plating some of your pile

I have several of the Printings / Papers plated now so I can help out there as well ........   maybe.. !

Cheers

Re: Universals - Help!!

Many thanks for the offer Roly.  It is greatly appreciated.

I am a complete novice when it comes to the Universals.  I acquired a large number at auction last year, and am only now starting to sort through them.  I also acquired a good few Dominions, but they'll wait for another day!!

Have been using a website suggested by VR (www.stamps4u.co.nz)

The flow chart on the site is absolutely superb and I have already sorted out the redrawn plates and separated out the 4 o'clock flaws.  Once I'm further on, I'll send you scans of some of the stamps I'm having problems with.  Re-touches in particular look an area of major difficulty in the future.

Final question.  I'd like to get a hold of some covers/postcards etc. with different universals on them.  Any suggestions of good sources?

Best wishes,

COQK

Re: Universals - Help!!

Roly will be delighted to read your feedback on the website that I suggested - he may even be blushing - it is his website!!

I agree it is an excellent resource and I am glad he has signed up for our message board

Re: Universals - Help!!

Hi,

Been sorting through universals, and have another question.  Almost all those sorted out with watermark 7 (W7) have well-centred marks.  A small number however are watermarked as shown below.  (This is looking at the back of the stamp as suggested by RolyRJ on his website.)  Was this simply due to the way in which the paper entered the press, and how common are they?

Thanks in advance,
COQK

p.s. Sorry about the image size.  Will try to sort this out for future posts!!

Re: Universals - Help!!

The positioning of the watermark was indeed all over the ship at times.

There is nothing particularly odd about your example above.

Re: Universals - Help!!

I wonder if you happened to discover any of the Universal Dickie trial coils in your lot. They are a special interest of mine and getting all 10 types of the early experimental coils is quite a task.

Re: Universals - Help!!

Hi Perfpilot,

Yes I have several of the Dickie trial coils and those of the later Parker machine and the Dickie&Brown machine.
You mention 10 types ?  I count only 8 using the Universals.

1st Dickie machine rouletting at 9.5 on Reserve Plate
1st Dickie machine rouletting at 9.5 on Dot Plate
2nd Dickie machine rouletting at 14.5 on Reserve Plate
2nd Dickie machine rouletting at 14.5 on Dot Plate
New Dickie machine imperf all round on Reserve Plate
Parker machine on Reserve Plate
Parker machine (no pin holes) on Reserve Plate
Dickie & Brown machine on Reserve Plate

I have them all but no duplicates at the moment but will keep you in mind :)

Cheers

Roly
