Hi
I have been sent the following email enquiring if any NZSGB members have any letters written by Joseph Davies from Auckland around 1863.  If you have any information could you please make a posting on this thread or email me at nzsgb1@googlemail.com.
The email is given below:

"I am currently researching correspondence and the life of Joseph Davies (sometimes Davis) of Auckland and formerly of Gelligare (Gelligaer) Wales and Sydney Australia.

Davies was a criminal who was transported to Australia in 1824 and wrote a letter to his wife from NSW in 1824. He subsequently was pardoned and in 1845 married Isabella Sinclair in Sydney. Sometime after that date he went to Auckland and wrote a letter in 1863 to his daughter back in Wales.

There was further correspondence to his daughter prior to 1863 (as implied in the 1863 letter) and I am wondering if any of you members own any of these letters, written by Joseph Davies. Such letters may also be signed by Isabella Davies

If you are aware of anyone who can help me with information I would be grateful for your assistance.

Thank you

Colin Lewis"

Letters to Martha Davies in Wales

I have received the following email about a letter from Davies:

"I saw your post on the NZSGB Discussion Board.

I have an outer wrapper (no letter) that appears to be from Davies in Auckland in 1849 addressed to Martha Davies at "Gellygare, Near Merthyr Tidvil Glamorganshire". As a collector of early NZ postal history, I know have seen other correspondence with this address over the years and, from memory (I am writing this from my office so I can't check), Vol VII of the PSNZ handbooks has a similar Davies cover illustrated in the 'routes & rates' chapter. "

I have checked Vol VII and on page 54 there is an 1856 letter addressed to Martha Davies at "Gellygare, Near Merthyr Tidvil". It has an Auckland mark on 4 January 1856 and a wide range of backstamps including a Merthyr Tidvil backstamp on 29 April.
